Today we consider voluntary poverty. We have explored this before with the example of the man who gave up money, for example. This time we look at Thoreau’s idea of voluntary poverty. Apparently, it inspired the voluntary simplicity movement but they shied away from poverty as they thought it would be a harder sell than ‘simplicity’. You make up your own mind. You can read about the benefits for one example in the US and also about how ‘poverty’ is a hard sell for the privileged. The motivation for some is simply a recognition that the world is full and cannot sustain our luxury lifestyles.
