If we remove the hard work of relating from our interactions we are left with ‘mere connection’

Listen to a 15 minute interview with Sherry Turkle about how relating is affected by ‘just connecting’. We become intolerant of the ‘boring’ real conversation and prefer the perfectly edited text – what may be the negative consequences of this editing? Sherry talks about studies that point to a 40% percent reduction in empathy in young people at college amongst other interesting ideas about the link between solitude and mature relationships. We have talked about this before in the context of people preferring an electric shock to sitting alone for a mere 6 minutes…the interview and the book speaks to the need of time for both being on the network and off the network.
