Today, we practice beholding. What is beholding? To experience an object or image firsthand. To look at an object and image with full attention, with regard and when possible, to hold and touch the object. Find ways to make this a vivid encounter which “often leads to another kind of encounter” Deborah Haynes tells us. We apply a discipline of contemplation which “includes the natural human capacity for knowing through silence, looking inward, pondering deeply, beholding, witnessing the contents of our consciousness, and so forth.” Tobin Hart reminds us.
Take a familiar object that is around you today and practice beholding it for 15 minutes. How does your perception of it change when you behold it in silence in the way we described above?
